Pipe rehabilitation with resin is a technique that repairs cracks, fissures and small breaks from the inside, without the need to chase walls or open trenches. A resin or polymer is injected to form a lining that seals the damaged pipe. It works well in pool circuits, embedded supply pipes and weakened joints, but it has clear limits: a collapsed, crushed or multiply broken pipe requires a different method.

How the process is carried out

The resin rehabilitation process follows steps designed to make the repair durable:

  1. Camera inspection. A robotic camera is introduced into the pipe to see its interior route, locate the section where the leak or damage is, and check for other weak points. The camera makes it possible to see breaks that cannot be seen from outside.
  2. Isolating, draining and drying the section. The water supply to the affected section is shut off, and its interior is drained and dried before the resin is applied; how it is dried and how long it takes depends on the product and the installation. In a pool, what is drained is that section of the circuit, not the basin: the pool can stay full. In a supply or heating installation, that section is out of service while the work lasts.
  3. Resin injection or application. The resin (for example epoxy or another polymer) is injected inside the pipe. The resin flows and adheres to the walls, penetrating cracks and fissures. In large circuits, different methods can be used depending on the shape of the break.
  4. Curing. The resin cures and solidifies, forming a new, watertight inner wall.
  5. Final pressure test. Once cured, the circuit is pressurised and checked to hold pressure without losses. If any point was not properly sealed, it is detected at this stage.

Where it works well

Resin is effective in these situations:

  • Pool circuits: Cracks in the return or pressure pipe and in the pool cleaner line. If the skimmer body is cracked, resin repair does not fix it and the skimmer is replaced. The camera shows where the problem is before action is taken.
  • Small supply pipes: Cold or hot water pipes embedded in walls or floors with cracks or localised corrosion. If they carry drinking water, only products suitable for drinking water may be used.
  • Weak joints: Points where two pipes meet and the joint is worn.
  • Pores or fine cracks: Resin can penetrate micro-fissures that a traditional patch does not reach.

The limits: when it does not work

There are cases where resin is not the solution:

  • Collapsed or crushed pipe. If the pipe has lost its circular shape, resin cannot create a uniform lining. That section must be replaced.
  • Several consecutive bends or changes of material. A pipe with multiple tight turns, or where rigid and flexible pipe are mixed, can prevent the resin from flowing evenly or curing properly. At those points a small opening and a conventional repair are needed.
  • Multiple breaks in the same section. If the pipe has several significant breaks (not pores) a few centimetres apart, the repair is more complex and costly. Sometimes replacing that metre of pipe is more practical. To understand the repair costs of different methods better, see our guide on repair quotes.
  • Pipes without access for inspection. If a camera cannot be introduced to see the interior, it is hard to ensure the repair is complete.

Difference from downpipe sleeving

Rehabilitating a supply pipe is not the same as rehabilitating a drainage downpipe. The sleeving of downpipes inserts an inner sleeve that creates a new pipe inside the old one. Resin injects a material that seals from inside. They are different techniques for different problems: resin for pressurised pipes, sleeving for larger-diameter drainage pipes.

Prior inspection: highly recommended

Before deciding whether resin rehabilitation is viable, leak detection including a camera inspection of the section is needed. Only by seeing the interior can one tell whether there is a fine crack (it is resin-repaired), a localised break (it is resin-repaired with confidence) or a collapse (it must be opened). In that inspection, a technician identifies whether there are multiple weak points that make another method preferable.

What to expect: time and result

The complete process, from inspection to the final test, may take several days depending on the size of the circuit. The intervention does not require works on walls or floors, but the affected section must be isolated and drained, which means cutting off water or heating for that time. A technician should plan the work to minimise disruption.

If after the repair the pressure gauge stays stable in the pressure test, that is a good sign. If in doubt, a second pressure test clarifies whether more work is needed.

Resin rehabilitation is a valid option for many types of leak, but not for all. An honest diagnosis should tell you whether it is viable in your case or whether you need another method. If you want us to assess your installation, contact us through our pipe repair without works.

Frequently Asked Questions

It is a technique that seals damaged pipes from the inside using resin or polymer, without chasing walls. The resin creates a lining that covers cracks and small breaks.
A well-executed rehabilitation is designed to last. Durability depends on the type of resin, the quality of the application, the pipe material and the working pressure; the technician should state the conditions of use of the product.
No. It works well on small cracks and damaged joints, but not on collapsed or crushed pipes, or pipes with several broken points. A technician should assess each case.
It is usually more economical than traditional works on accessible sections, but it depends on the case. For a complete break in an accessible pipe, a small opening and a new section may be the better option.
